Climbing Mt. Tarija

So out of the corner of my eye today I see this:

Now these didn't look like flying bugs, they looked like creepy crawlies and I say that because my first reaction wasn't eww gross but in true geek fashion my mind thinks "WOW, that was a far climb up here - I wonder what that equates to considering the height of an average man." And thus, for the next few minutes I did some rough calculations and came up with this... those little buggers IF they did climb up here from the ground floor roughly climbed the height of Mt. Tarija in the Andes.  Oh and their incline was much harder mind you... GO little bugs go...

My iphoney is activated hoooray!  I made my own ring tone hoooray!  itunes only charged me twice hooorrrwwwhat T F?  Yah .99 to buy the song, and .99 to cut out the 15 seconds of the song I wanted to use for my ring tone.  Ok so fine, take my dollar ninety eight but at least give me the option of cutting up that song any way I like in the future!  Nope, you get one shot and if you decide you like another 15 seconds of the song better or want to change things up later down the road with that song you purchased...  Get another 99 pennies out.  Now don't go emailing me all the hacks...  I know there out there.

I bought an iphone this weekend.

iphone activations have been down for over 30 hours.  (I'm only counting when I started trying)  Some users have not been able to activate since Friday.  Apple blames AT&T and vise versa. 

This seriously sucks, is frustrating and anticlimactic.  Some experience.

Abrams' Trek Launching in Christmas '08

It's official. J.J. Abrams is beaming up for duty.

After months of speculation, the Lost mastermind has confirmed he will helm Paramount Pictures' first new Star Trek voyage in more than five years.

The tentatively titled Star Trek XI will follow the formula of franchise reinvention pioneered by Batman Begins/Casino Royale—i.e., do an origin tale of the main characters.

In this case, the new Trek will travel back to the Starfleet Academy salad days of James T. Kirk and his best half-Vulcan buddy Spock as they boldly go on their first adventures together in the final frontier.

Paramount is targeting a stardate of Christmas Day 2008 to launch the new-old crew.

The script is being penned by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who also wrote last May's Mission: Impossible III, which marked Abrams' feature-helming debut. Kurzman and Orci are also part of the production team with Abrams and his Lost pals Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burke

There's no word on casting yet. William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, both 75, played Kirk and Spock, respectively, on the original 1966-69 Trek TV series and in several Trek movies.

A self-professed Trek nerd, Abrams initially agreed to develop the project last year, taking on the daunting task of overhauling a creaky franchise that had grossed more than $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales but recently had fallen on tough times.

The last Next Generation-powered movie installment, Star Trek: Nemesis, bombed at the box office (with just $67 million worldwide on an estimated budget of $60 million, per Box Office Mojo). The most recent TV series, Star Trek: Enterprise, a prequel set in the days long before Kirk and Spock, lasted only four low-rated seasons before being canceled in 2005.  And in 2003, Paramount and the Trek brain trust were sued by a former partner for letting the once vaunted franchise fall into "decay."

"If there's something I'm dying to see, it's the brilliance and optimism of [creator Gene] Roddenberry's world brought back to the big screen," said Abrams.

"Alex and Bob wrote an amazing script that embraces and respects Trek canon, but charts its own course. Our goal is to make a picture for everyone—lifelong fans and the uninitiated. Needless to say, I am honored and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek."

Paradox 101: and of course how it relates to my love life

Paradox

A paradox is an apparently true statement or group of statements that seems to lead to a contradiction or to a situation that defies intuition. Typically, either the statements in question do not really imply the contradiction, the puzzling result is not really a contradiction, or the premises themselves are not all really true (or, cannot all be true together). The recognition of ambiguities, equivocations, and unstated assumptions underlying known paradoxes has often led to significant advances in science, philosophy and mathematics.

The word paradox is often used interchangeably with contradiction; but where a contradiction by definition cannot be true, many paradoxes do allow of resolution, though many remain unresolved or only contentiously resolved (such as Curry's paradox). Still more casually, the term is sometimes used for situations that are merely surprising (albeit in a distinctly "logical" manner) such as the Birthday Paradox. This is also the usage in economics, where a paradox is an unintuitive outcome of economic theory.

So let’s work through this here, because well, I’m all about sharing myself with you folks – and let’s see how Anita has come to be a paradox.  If I am told, “You’re too good to be true” isn’t that a contradiction in itself?  And if a contradiction is a paradox, then that proves that although I seem too good to be true, what is really happening is that I defy intuition, but credibly at some point, that will be proved wrong.  As well, the above statement being an “assumption” which as stated underlies known paradoxes, once addressed by the party could yet again lead to significant advances!  That truly could be surprising! 

Ahhhh, it’s all so clear now…

Isn't it nice to know it's not all in your head or just a feeling?  I think here shall begin my look into Paradoxes and how they support so much of what we experience every day.  For those of you who need a further intro into Paradoxes see this post.  Now back to understanding why we "can never catch up":

In the paradox of Achilles and the tortoise, we imagine the Greek hero Achilles in a footrace with the plodding reptile. Because he is so fast a runner, Achilles graciously allows the tortoise a head start of a hundred feet. If we suppose that each racer starts running at some constant speed (one very fast and one very slow), then after some finite time, Achilles will have run a hundred feet, bringing him to the tortoise's starting point; during this time, the tortoise has "run" a (much shorter) distance, say one foot. It will then take Achilles some further period of time to run that distance, during which the tortoise will advance farther; and then another period of time to reach this third point, while the tortoise moves ahead. Thus, whenever Achilles reaches somewhere the tortoise has been, he still has farther to go. Therefore, Zeno says, swift Achilles can never overtake the tortoise.
