I had a 60 plus year old try to school me while standing in line at Dairy Queen this evening. I saw it coming all the way...
Here's the set up... Just finished playing softball so I've got somewhat of a youngish look going... No makeup, hair curly as I didn't dry it today, pony tail sticking out of my visor hat. Grey sweat shorts, pink flip flops (took cleats off) and the matter of subject, a billabong tee shirt.
So this crotchety is staring me down... looking me up and down, upppppp and down... Finally he walks UP TO ME and says with a sarcastic tone and smirk...
CM: "Do you even know what billabong is?"
UofA: "Why, yes I do, would you like me to explain it to you?"
CM: "I'm asking do you know what it is besides just a name on your shirt- you know most kids just wear stuff and don't even know what it really is"
Uof A: "Yes, believe it or not I do know what it is" ( he is looking at me like I'm playing him off and that I don't know so won't say...)
CM: "It's what Australians call water"
Uof A: "Actually, it's an Aboriginal word for a stagnant pool of water formed by a dead end stream or river - billa means creak and bong is dead"
CM stood seriously with his mouth ajar... then I added:
Uof A: "Also, pertaining to the brand Billabong let's teach you something... did YOU know the man who held the US license for Billabong did not renew and has since renamed his line? His name is Bill Hurley and his merchandise is now Hurley International, so if you ever see a Hurley shirt you can say, cool shirt ex billabong dude right? "
...and he turned and walked away as my softball buddies cheered and ("low fived" me... trying to be a tad respectful) and asked... how did you know that???
Don't ever mess with a Aerospace SoCal Surfer girl... viva and LA BAM... Yah, it's like that...
