Northern Spotted Owl
Strix occidentalis caurina
After months of campaigning to protect vital Northern spotted owl habitat, Canadian environmental group, Wilderness Committee, has received some encouraging news. International Forest Products (Interfor) has suspended all timber-cutting activities in spotted owl management areas with immediate effect.
STATUS: ESA -- THREATENED
SIZE:
Length: 16-19 inches (41-48 cm)
Wingspan: Around 42 inches (107 cm)
Weight: 1-1.6 pounds (0.5-0.7 kg)
Female is larger than the male <grin>
HABITAT: Old-growth forest with Douglas fir, western hemlock and redwood
POPULATION: Undetermined, thought to be between 3,000 and 5,000 pairs
(only 1 elusive in Colorado)
CONSERVATION: Recovery plan designating habitat protection areas; guidelines for forest management; and lot's of TLC ( a nice dinner out would help too - I don't eat meeses to pieces though)
